What does it mean to have it all? Who says we are supposed to have it all? Why can’t we just be happy and well? Shouldn’t that be enough?
How about we flip the script here and turn the question into How can I be well? How can I be present? How can I truly enjoy my life as it is? In doing this you will probably discover that you do have it all already!
So what role do Wellness practices have in all of this?
We are sold ideals of wellness practices and rituals that to most people are unattainable, because they are expensive, time consuming or complicated. We all have jobs, families and responsibilities that take up what appears to be all of our time. But without being well in ourselves we cannot perform optimally in other aspects of our lives. We cannot pour from an empty cup. When we do not look after ourselves every day tasks can become impossible.
Do not despair, you do not have to figure it all out at once. You do not have to do all of the things immediately. You don’t have to practice every ritual every day and it will not take over all of your time. It is about progress not perfection and immersing yourself in the process will bring you so much joy. You will even become more efficient and present in your every day life as a result. So lets look at wellness and the idea of being ‘well’.
Start out with identifying your intention. This means figuring out your “why”. Why do you want or need to feel well? Do you need better focus, do you need to start taking time for yourself or do you want to feel more connected to yourself and present with those around you?
Whatever your “why” there are practices that you can incorporate into your everyday life that will result in vast improvements in your well being. You do not have to start all of these practices today, you can introduce that one by one, slowly, until they become habitual parts of your everyday life. They do not even have to be all done everyday, you can do some once a week and others can become part of your daily routine. Do what works for you. This is your journey and we are on it together.
You do not need to incorporate every trend that comes along. That would be quite exhausting and expensive and only realistic if you have all day every day to devote to wellness. That’s not real, so lets be real.
Try out new rituals that inspire you on a daily or weekly basis, be consistent with your practice and if they do not work discard them, but if they do work incorporate them as a daily or weekly habit. This sampling and the resulting consistency of practice will lead you to a place of wellness, a place of peace. You will get what you need from the practices that you love and the results that they produce. Trying new practices and keeping up with the rituals that work that’s where the joy is. Learning to love this process of discovery and its results is everything. Isn’t that really what we’re talking about when we talk about having it all?!
I was at a yoga class the other day where I overheard a lady and gentleman chatting about how great yoga makes them feel. They were seasoned practitioners but were by no means the most flexible or advanced individuals in the class. Just being near them in the class enhanced my experience because they enjoyed and savored every moment on the mat. They were consumed by and enjoyed the process, not pushing to be perfect but just giving themselves up to the practice and enjoying the experience. And that is the secret, enjoy the process!
Not everyone has the time to meditate and do yoga for hours every day, not everyone has the resources to go on week long retreats to India, but everyone has the time to practice wellness, whether it is 10 minutes or a hour daily, the benefits are what will keep you consistent and motivate you to find the time.
Find a “why” that inspires you, find a practice that motivates you and a reason to be consistent. Then you will truly have it all.
I will be here for you every step of the way providing tips and advice on tried and tested practices and even trying out some new ones that come along. I am here to provide you with the inspiration to become Real Well. Our journey of discovery together starts now!
